Alopecia

Scalp Micropigmentation for Alopecia

Alopecia is a condition which causes the loss of hair on parts of the head and/or body where hair would normally grow. About 2% of people have alopecia. It can strike at any age, any gender and any ethnicity. There is no cure, but SMP can be a great solution. Read our blog to learn more

What are the different types of alopecia?

Depending on the type of alopecia, it can be caused or exacerbated by numerous factors. There are several different types of alopecia, all of which have their own specific causes and effects.

ALOPECIA AREATA

An autoimmune condition which causes hair loss in circular patches. Hair loss can occur at any point in your life, and in many cases, hair loss is brought on or worsened by stress, trauma, or a change in an individual’s hormones.

ALOPECIA TOTALIS

Alopecia totalis is a type of alopecia areata, and describes cases in which there is total or near-total hair loss on an individual’s scalp. It accounts for as much as 5% of patients who have hair loss caused by an autoimmune disorder.

ALOPECIA UNIVERSALIS

Like alopecia areata and alopecia totalis, alopecia universalis is a type of hair loss caused autoimmune disorder, and describes the loss of all hair on the body. A rarer form of alopecia, this type accounts for 1% of all alopecia cases.

TRACTION ALOPECIA

Traction alopecia is a type of hair loss that can occur when hair is frequently pulled or strained, as can occur in individuals whose hair is regularly pulled in braids or weaves, or in those who make use of hair extensions. If caught early enough, hair may be able to re-grow after a period of time.

How Scalp Micropigmentation Works

Unlike other treatment options that can be expensive and unreliable, scalp micropigmentation provides a safe and affordable way for people with any type or degree of alopecia to mask the effects of the condition and create the appearance of a full head of hair. Scalp micropigmentation injects dots of pigment under the skin of your scalp to create the illusion of hair that has recently been shaved and is beginning to grow back.

FIRST VISIT

Your hairline will be drawn on again, any new questions will be discussed. We will begin the scalp micropigmentation process and apply a conservative amount of pigment to your scalp. The full head for Alopecia Totalis or Universalis will be worked on during every session so that the color and density will build uniformly all over.

The color and density of the pigment will be carefully chosen to create a natural appearance. After this session you will have an idea of the overall look and you will have to be patient, because SMP is a process and looks better after each session.

3

FOLLOW UP VISIT

We will check how everything healed and how your skin absorbed the ink. At this point we will re-asses the shade of the ink and see if we can go darker. The second session is a perfect time to firm up on the design of the hairline.

With each session the results will start looking more real. Each step is exciting and the final session is as exciting for a client as it is for an artist. The final result will be visible about 3-4 weeks after the last session as the skin heals and the ink cures.
